The “#MeToo” campaign is one of the leading areas of activists to come together to fight for the rights of women to avoid harassment and achieve gender equality in the coming years. The success achieved by the campaign has already seen many major male media figures see their careers crumble under the weight of allegations made by women in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal which rocked the film industry.

Roc Nation COO Desiree Perez has been named one of the leading female executives in the history of the music industry and has recently signed an open letter directed at the recent comments made by Recording Academy president Neil Portnow. As the media industry looked to empower women, Portnow explained his belief women in the music industry had to step up their game in order to compete with their male counterparts; the backlash against Portnow has been swift and striking with Desiree Perez among a group of the most-respected female executives in the media industry calling for change at the Recording Academy.

The open letter was addressed to the trustees of the Recording Academy and explained the view of the business leader who has been an integral part of the organization of Shawn Carter, better known as rapper Jay-Z for more than two decades. As a part of the team around Jay-Z, Desiree Perez has been a driving force behind the dominance at Roc Nation of female artists such as Beyonce and Rihanna. The fight that pitted journalist against sheriff

Many may not be familiar with the history of Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. They are the former owners of the Phoneix news time; this is a publication that focused on news stories that affected Arizona as well as the country at large.Driven by curiosity and the love to tell stories as well as protect the first amendment right and ensure that the public is truthfully informed is what pushed them over the years.

The duo has had a lot of ups and downs, especially with one sheriff Joe Arpaio. Sheriff Joe was self-declared Americas toughest sheriff.Having been elected to office in 1992, he was a former Drug enforcement officer who believed that he could change the system and better the community while at it. Read more: Michael Lacey | Twitter and Jim Larkin | LinkedIn

On joining the sheriff’s office, however, his perspective change and for the six terms that he would be reelected to office, they would come to be the most ferocious ones for the Latino community in Maricopa County. He ran a racist office that was hell-bent on racial profiling and suppressing anyone that was opposed to him.

He was so blatant in his disregard for the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens that he had no problem running a self-declared “concentration camp.” This was an area where he would round up anybody that did not look or talk like him and organize for there deportation.

He was the focus of numerous scandals that were part of his administration this included the death of inmates in his cells as well as the illegal diversion of jail money in the tune of millions of dollars over the years.

In August 2007 he led a raid that would see Jim Larkin and Michel Lacey were arrested in the middle of the night. The two were arrested in the middle of the night and transported using two unmarked SUVs before they were locked up in separate jails. Learn more about Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey: http://www.bizjournals.com/phoenix/potmsearch/detail/submission/6427818/Michael_Lacey and http://releasefact.com/2017/09/jim-larkin-and-michael-lacey-continue-fight-for-latino-rights-after-pardoning-of-joe-arpaio/

Their mistake was the intense focus they had been putting on his operations. Having been very vocal about his violations on the Phoenix news time, it did not sit well with the sheriff. The arrest of the two drew so much outcry from the public that the sheriff deemed it unfeasible to continue holding them.the two were released the following day pronto, and all the bogus charges that had been brought against them were dropped.

What followed was a court battle pitting the duo and the sheriff’s office against each other. The pair had sued for illegal arrest and violation of their first amendment rights. In 2013 the ninth district court of appeal ruled that indeed the arrests had been made illegally and there first amendment rights had been violated.

The county had no option but to settle with them and this resulted in an award of 3.75 Million dollars. This amount was dedicated to the Frontera fund which today is the leading fighter for Latino rights in Arizona and beyond. Jim and Michel continue to fight for the freedom of the Latino community with the firm belief that they deserve the best representation too.

Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey active supporters of human rights

Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey are the founders of the Frontera Fund and the Front Page Confidential, two entities that support the immigrants in the United States and the freedom of speech. Before this two entities came to be what is it there was a legal fight wit Joe Arpaio the former sheriff at Maricopa county. Arpaio has been seen as a controversial figure not only in Arizona but also in all the states been known as ” America’s Toughest Sheriff”, for being a hardliner with the immigrant population in Arizona. It has been known to tell Maricopa County officers to target Latino drivers, issue that led him to court and judge Murray Snow issuing a preliminary injunction ordering him to stop targeting latino drivers which is a form of racial profiling. But they continued to target latino drivers for the next 18 months leading to court again and being declared that the order of the judge has been willfully violated.

Carpaio has been also known to target not only immigrants but also the one who criticize him having in his sight the Phoenix News Times. On October 18, 2017 armed deputies of Maricopa County under orders of Arpaio went to the houses of Larkin and Lacey and took them away in unmarked SUVs with mexican licensed plates and booked them into separate jails. This caused so huge of an outcry that they were released in lees than a day. After that Larkin and Lacey went to a legal battle with Carpaio concluding that they were illegally detained violating the first amendment. After the legal battle Maricopa County ended up paying Larkin and Lacey 3.75 million that they used to found the frontera fund and the front page confidential site that supports Freedom of speech and the rights of immigrants.

Mike Baur Discusses Three Elements To A Successful Startup Plan

Mike Baur at one time was being coached and trained to become a successful bank account advisor, but now he’s coaching and training people on what should be done to build a business from scratch. He founded the Swiss Startup Factory as a hub for combining entrepreneurs’ ideas with business investor goals, and it’s become one of the hottest companies in Switzerland for generating new jobs. But Baur wants to go beyond just putting startups in the market to building sustainable companies that will last for years. He believes to build a sustainable business, you have to follow three philosophies.

First and foremost, forming and growing a startup never comes through chance opportunities. The entrepreneur has to do the work to lay the foundation for the company and be a part of a network to get the funding and get the technical support to make it happen. Second, Mike Baus talks about the need to take risks and just what those risks are. The risk isn’t necessarily starting the company in hopes it succeeds, but rather it’s what you do once it’s running such as what you prioritize your company spending on, or new products you decide to put into circulation. And finally, Baur says adaptability is key because at some point the industry your business serves is going to change, and whether you’ll survive that change depends on your ability to adapt.

Mike Baur loves his job as Chairman of the SSUF because things are always changing and he meets others who share his enthusiasm for startups. Prior to that he worked in banking and though he was happy with that career at first, it later became a maze of red tape that he grew tired of working around. He had been told as a young apprentice in commercial banking at UBS Bank that he could follow a chart mapping out his career and he would reach a wealthy retirement at the end of it. Instead, after seeing the problems come out of the 2008 crisis, Baur decided it was time to go elsewhere with his work. Baur ignored the words of individuals who told him the government was already supplying business grants to startups saying his plans for a privately-owned accelerator were not needed. Upon the SSUF’s launch, the interest in its program by startup owners was overwhelming. To this day, hundreds of startups have gone from early stage to fully running.

Eric Lefkofsky – Changing The Way We Treat Cancer

Statistics show that forty percent of adults in the United States will face cancer at some point in their adult life. These statistics show that cancer touches everyone personally or through someone they know at some point. The National Cancer Institute, estimated that in 2014 nearly 14.5 million people in the U.S. were living with cancer. It is projected that this number will jump to over 19 million by the year 2024.

People like Eric Lefkofsky and his company Tempus are looking to change these projections. Tempus is taking the lead in the innovative field of data-enabled precision medicine. Technology is advancing all around us and one would assume it is advancing in the medical field as well. But when it comes to data collection and digital technology, there was something missing. Eric Lefkofsky learned this first hand when his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer and he set out to do something about it.

As a firm Tempus, had a goal of changing the way cancer care was being delivered. Their platform has been created to analyze a patients clinical and molecular data. There were several hurdles Tempus had to overcome in developing this technology. One being the expense of information. Since the future of fighting cancer seems to be directed at treating it on the molecular level, Tempus has tried to combine information in order to provide the effective cancer treatments.

Eric Lefkofsky, currently resides in Chicago where Tempus is headquartered. He serves as a member of the board of directors for Lurie’s Children Memorial Hospital of Chicago and is on the board of trustees for The Steppenworth Theatre of Chicago. Eric still hasn’t reached the age of 50 and is very accomplished. He graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School. Despite his education he never became a lawyer, instead he found himself involved in the dot-com movement and very successful at it. He has held a number of teaching positions and is currently an adjunt professor at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.

Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund; Coming To The Aid Of Defranchised Immigrants

Immigrants who reside in Arizona have suffered discrimination for a long time. For decades, the rights of over 325,00 immigrants have been violated. 2013, however, saw the establishment of the Larkin and Lacey charity. A foundation focused on providing funds to activist groups fighting for the rights of immigrants.

The founders of this fund Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin had a hard time as journalists. They had to fight Joe Arpaio, the corrupt sheriff of Maricopa County. They were against the sheriff’s utter disregard for immigrant rights. This led to them being arrested under the sheriff’s order.

The arrest was rendered wrongful because it was done using invalid subpoenas. The subpoenas demanded that the two journalists give the names of the editors and writers of the publication. However, upon registering a suit against the county of Maricopa for the violations of their journalistic rights, the two won the legal battle and were compensated with an amount of $3.75 million. The money was invested in the establishment of the Larkin and Lacey charity.

Aliento is a non-profit institution whose establishment was spearheaded by undocumented Hispanic youth to help the community through art and advocacy. This group is a beneficiary of the Lacey and Larkin fund.

Aliento uses creative ways to show that immigrants in the US are also human. It does so by showing how the immigrants have suffered, some criminalized and or even deported. The organization works to bring a change in how immigrants are perceived. It does so through creative artistry, intuitive education drives and the nurturing of future leaders.

Since the presidency of Donald Trump, over a million undocumented immigrants and beneficiaries of DACA are living their lives in fear of deportation. The DACA program was abolished, and this means the deportation of many immigrants.

Many immigrants have managed to get an education in the US and some even hold drivers licenses. Presently a minimal 7 percent of youths from the category of Hispanic immigrants have managed to bag a chance of accessing higher education.

Aliento has been giving support to ensure the welfare of individuals who are DACA beneficiaries in Arizona. Before abolishment by President Trump, they worked hard to sustain the DACA program. Its main aim is to see to the empowerment of undocumented immigrants through pro educational activities, fostering resilience and healing among other things.

They also make sure to address matters surrounding deportation. The organizations have plans to conduct seminars in two states where it raises awareness to those who benefit from the DACA program and those who advocate for it.

The forums shall help the immigrants to realize their rights and also to urge support for churches and schools in those states. Reyna Montoya, who is the founder of Aliento, believes that immigrants cannot be safe under a Trump presidency.

Justice That Works is also a beneficiary of the Frontera Fund. The organization works locally to ensure a halt in the mass incarceration going on in Arizona. The charity has been vocal against the violation of the rights of immigrants, their detentions and deportations all under the pretense of enhancing security in the region.

The organizations through the surveillance of police and prison systems have shown how corrupt the society is and how they think they can willfully do away with people. According to the organization, the government’s approach disregards equity, dignity and even safety since its encouraging violence and poor treatment of minority communities.
